About Us
'Palmerston' is a mixed farming enterprise comprising 850ha, situated in the Northern Midlands of Tasmania approx 60km South West of Launceston near Poatina. Our close proximity to the Western Tiers can produce severe weather conditions and our average rainfall is 700mm per annum. Our commercial sheep flock comprises 2500 Coopworth cross ewes (self replacing) with surplus lambs finished for the 18 -22kg markets. Approximately 500 stud Coopworth ewes and ewe hoggetts are joined. From the resulting progeny 100 - 150 rams are offered for sale in December each year.
100 Angus and Angus X cows are calved down with progeny finished as yearlings for local markets. 150ha of irrigated cropping, producing poppies, peas, grass seed and fodder.
Over the past 25 years we have moved away from a Merino flock to the current Coopworth cross flock. This shift has been due to the easy care attributes of the Coopworths and has reduced our footrot and internal parasite problems by approximately 80% reulting in major labour savings.
We see a bright future in lamb production and will continue to strive to produce productive seedstock for the Tasmanian prime lamb industry.
