Maternal Composites Our aim is to retain the good qualities of the Coopworth breed, whilst incorporating genes from related maternal breeds ie Romney or Perendale or from meat breeds ie Texel and Poll Dorset. Coopworth x Perendale (Coopdale) are already proving successful in NZ. We envisage these will be very useful in more difficult grazing areas of North-West Tasmania and South of Hobart. The Cheviot genes flowing through from the Perendale give them the ability to convert poorer quality grasses to meat. They are:
Coopworth x Texel x Poll Dorset - an option for those already running cross bred ewes. These composite sheep will retain attributes of the Coopworth, produce more meat and less wool therefore more meat and $/ha, female progeny can be retained and stabilized by joining back to Coopworth. The burgeoning feedlot industry will soon be targeting composite meat breeds because of their better feed to meat conversion, in preference to Merino 1st cross.
